Sources used
This collection of 20 classic books,  each with a special message, will be kept at will be kept
MagillOnLiterature Plus, Fiction Connection, Books in Print and  Novelist were mainly used for the plot, genre, appeal factors. Book covers came from Books in print. Amazon.com was used for the book cover for “The Shrouded Woman” . MagillOnLiterature Plus was used for much of the plot, although the other sources were used to simplify and shorten the story to its important features. All sources were used to identify genre and general appeal factors for each novel. A bibliography for sources used is at the end of this page.

Search strategies

Selection of novels by genre
The main genres  used for for searching fo appropriate novels for “Classics with a Message” were Surrealist literature, Psychological fiction, Utopian fiction, Dystopian fiction. Some novels with genres of Social realism and Magical realism were also considered suitable.
MagillOnLiterature Plus and Novelist were the easiest to search for required appeal factors and genre. However keywords must be exact (to one word) except for Magill subject terms can be + “s”.
The keywords can be searched for in index lists which are easier to search. For classics with a message Magill : Literary Genre : Surrealist literature, Psychological fiction, Utopian fiction, Dystopian fiction and to a lesser extent Magical realism and Social realism.
Novelist: Genre: Surrealist fiction, Psychological fiction
Magill was also searched using subject terms: self-discovery, values, social issues, haunting, hallucinations and counterculture.
Novelist was also searched using appeal factors (=storyline ,pace tone, writing style)
:
Fiction Connection was used to find similar novels to “The Pearl” using keywords “classic” and “life changes”. “Fahrenheit 451 and “World Light” appeared suitable from the list.

Novelist produced Boyle, T Coghessan, and Kennedy, Williams as read alike authors. This lead to Drop City for Boyle (counterculture) and Ironweed for Kennedy being selected.

North Sydney public library held all books except for the two buy Maria Luisa Bombal. And “Fahrenheit 451”, but it did have a sound recording for “Fahrenheit 451” , showing some public interest in the selected books, since some were written decades ago.

Usefulness of bibliography
Relevance
The selection of books will allow students to compare messages and styles of delivery from a wide range on novelists, locations and environments. Authors included a number of women, South Americans, two Americans including an African American , a German and Australians. There are numbers of authors with lyrical writing  style and humour. A number of the novels are quite moving, The messages in many of these novels are
Important lifestyle information that often was gained after many years.
Using the blong’s labels students can choose a novel which will suit their taste as several appeal factors have been included with each novel.
Blog format
The blog format is simple and not cluttered. Their is some white space which helps. The outer background when applied became a complete forest. This was much preferable to patterns crammed in around the edges. The main Australian author website, North Sydney Library and catalogue are directly accessible. The pictures use wrap around so there are not large areas of unavoidable white space. The North Sydney banner is attractive and the blog heading colours were chosen so the lettering did not disappear either into the lines of the bridge or the white sky.
The simple black writing for general text and light blue for lables is good for readability, and does not  clash with the pictures and background forest which give enough colour, but not too much. The label summaries are very useful for locating books, authors and the attractive features of individual novels.

Omitted Selection
Laxness, Halldor Kiljan World Light.New York: Knopf Doubleday, 2002.
World Light was the read-alike selected using Fiction Connection and The Pearl. The book appeared on several other searches. It would have extended localities to Iceland. The book was translated from the original language by the famous Magnus Magnussen. However sections of the book in other non-English language were not translated and one wonders if some of the translated sections had the original meaning. Reviewers didn’t appear enthusiastic. Also the book is over 600 pages, which is a little long for HSC students.
